Biography

Ian McFarlane is a young Welsh bass-baritone, currently based in the West Midlands. As a soloist he works in opera, oratorio, and concerts, and performs at weddings, funerals and other functions. Any booking queries or feedback can be sent using the Contact section of this site.
After graduating from Keele University, Ian studied privately with Jeremy Huw Williams and then went on to study at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2009/10, where he trained under Gwion Thomas.
Operatic roles have included Aeneas (The Complete Singer), Valentine (Midland Opera), Zuniga (Random Opera), Ping (Midland Opera) and Belcore (Midland Opera). Ian sang chorus in Longborough Festival Opera’s 2012 production of The Magic Flute, and went on to sing Speaker/Priest/Armed Man in the associated Complete Singer tour. He was also cover for Speaker/Priest/Armed Man in Co-Opera Co’s touring production of The Magic Flute in 2012/13. In summer 2013 he joined Longborough again, singing chorus in Götterdämmerung as part of their Ring Cycle. In May this year, Ian has sung the role of Lord Guglielmo Cecil with Opera Seria in Manchester. In addition, Ian revisited the role of Speaker in The Magic Flute with Midland Opera in July.
In addition to performing opera, Ian has performed oratorio and concerts with a number of choirs including Kettering Camerata Choir, Cantando Voices, Waifs and Staves, The Severn Singers, and Blaenavon Male Voice Choir. Ian also has extensive experience of choral singing. A current member of the CBSO Chorus, he has previously sung with BBC National Chorus of Wales, National Youth Choir of Wales, as well as many smaller ensembles including cathedral choirs and various student groups, including The Icarus Ensemble at Birmingham Conservatoire. He is a founding member of the newly formed Birmingham-based vocal ensemble Geo Cantata.
